In this Rising Tide Foundation lecture, Nicholas Jones explores the universal method of analysis and transformative artistic composition of the great poet of freedom Friedrich Schiller.

Nicholas begins by setting the stage of the period in time in which Schiller himself lived and worked. This was a late 18th century Europe clamoring for liberty from those hereditary systems of empire that had long kept humankind trapped in a cage of obedience, war, division and ignorance.

The general method of Schiller’s Universal History is then explored with a focus on Schiller’s understanding of those universal constants, both positive and negative within all human hearts and minds (irregardless of particular cultural or temporal divisions) which provide historians firm guidelines to weave together a true science of history.

Having set a broad framework in place, Nicholas then provides an in-depth exploration of Schiller’s famous play Mary Stuart which tackles an important period of potential within England’s history where a great moment had found several very little people who failed to rise to the occasion that historic forces demanded of them.
